December 7, 2004 Esphion delivers network of intelligent security agents for Hong Kong Telco
Hong Kong – 7 December 2004 – Esphion a world leader in proactive security solutions, today announced that PCCW one of the largest Telco’s and Service Providers in the world has completed the implementation of Esphion’s NetX neural intelligence platform to protect its network against internet attacks. "At PCCW we have worked very hard to find a proactive, real time security solution that we can deploy widely in our fast growing IP networks “said PCCW’s Director of Product Development & Management. “Esphion have proven to us that they can provide carrier class scalability and a distributed network of intelligent agents which provide deep insight into IP traffic events." “PCCW have implemented a network of Esphion’s intelligent security agents and analysis servers to protect their network infrastructure and improve the service they offer their 500,000 broadband customers” said Greg Cross, CEO of Esphion. “Our use of industry leading neural network analysis engines ensures all of our customers have a real time layer of security which is uniquely tuned to the IP traffic traversing its network at any point in time.” The PCCW implementation was completed in conjunction with Esphion reseller Evolution Security Systems. Esphion’s NetX neural intelligence technology provides real time analysis of IP packets, identifying internet attacks and traffic anomalies - producing precise signatures of events that may be quickly applied to network and security elements. Esphion’s proactive security solutions were delivered to PCCW on Hewlett Packard’s ProLiant, high performance rack mounted servers. They may be deployed individually or as a distributed and geographically dispersed solution for network-wide data collection, analysis and anomaly detection. Esphion’s proactive security solutions offer Telco’s and Service Providers significant returns on investment by reducing the costs associated with detecting, diagnosing and stopping network anomalies, integrating tightly with existing network and security infrastructure and maximizing customer service levels.

The solution At the first detection of a possible DDoS attack, netDeFlect produces a fine-grained attack signature which is applied in the form of an access control list (ACL) to the Layer 3 switches. This is then used to block all traffic originating from the source of the DDoS attack (regardless of whether the addresses are spoofed) before it reaches any critical network infrastructure. The immediacy offered by netDeFlect has helped to dramatically reduce the average resolution time for a network attack to just five minutes. Perhaps more importantly, by adding this proactive layer of defense the web hosting company has been able to improve service and ensure a greater ability to maintain service levels for its customers, regardless of network anomalies.
