Esphion expands Australian business following venture capital raising

Network disaster protection vendor extends Australian sales presence; unveils strategy for growth.

Esphion Pty Ltd, a leader in proactive network security solutions, has announced plans for the expansion of its Australian office and the appointment of a dedicated local sales team following the successful completion of a NZ$4 million capital raising exercise in late 2004.

Mr Robert Young has been appointed General Manager – Sales, to lead the company’s expansion plans in the Australian market. Young has a 15 year career of technology sales and marketing in Europe and Australasia, spanning enterprise software applications and hardware. His responsibilities have ranged from sales and marketing management to strategic planning, raising of capital, market and product development. As sales director of CommSoft Group, Young played a major role in its successful listing to the ASX. Most recently he was based in the UK establishing Engage Limited’s European operations. Young has also worked for corporations such as UBix, Stellent and Interwoven.

Young’s first task will be to develop a sales arm to work alongside the existing Australian support team.

Esphion provides proactive security solutions to large telecommunications, corporate and government customers throughout the Asia Pacific region. Using the company’s patented neural technologies and packet-based analysis, Esphion’s products offer real time protection against IP anomalies that may herald worms, denial of services attacks or other network disasters. Young is bullish about the Australian market opportunities for Esphion. “While the reactive security market is becoming more crowded by the minute, we’re finding the proactive intelligent approach of our products strike a chord with almost everyone we speak to. Esphion’s incorporation of neural network technology into our netDeFlect solution means we can identify previously unseen and unknown threats in real time and protect an organisation’s network from the moment of installation.”

With the Australian office up and running to compliment its presence in Asia, Esphion is now in the process of establishing the company’s first foothold in North America.

Esphion is located at Level 6, 90 Mount Street, North Sydney and can be contacted by phone on 02 9955 3611. Their website is www.esphion.com.

The solution
The web hosting company installed netDeFlect, Esphion’s patented network security solution. A single, standalone netDeFlect agent was deployed, connecting to the company’s two data centres to provide the new layer of DDoS protection.
To provide early warning of any build-up in traffic, the agent’s sensor is connected to a series of Layer 3 switches located upstream of the company’s border routers, as close to the boundary with its ISP as possible.

At the first detection of a possible DDoS attack, netDeFlect produces a fine-grained attack signature which is applied in the form of an access control list (ACL) to the Layer 3 switches. This is then used to block all traffic originating from the source of the DDoS attack (regardless of whether the addresses are spoofed) before it reaches any critical network infrastructure.

The immediacy offered by netDeFlect has helped to dramatically reduce the average resolution time for a network attack to just five minutes. Perhaps more importantly, by adding this proactive layer of defense the web hosting company has been able to improve service and ensure a greater ability to maintain service levels for its customers, regardless of network anomalies.

Esphion is there to detect anomalous behavior in your unique network environment - we don't care whether it is an attack that has a name and a signature or not - if it is determined to have the potential to disrupt your network we will provide you a solution to block it before it does. Think of us as a highly intelligent virtual network and security engineer watching network links 24x7x365.
